how it's going

This morning the Lady told me her dog ears weren't working as good as she wanted and couldn't hear if it was time to schedule my trip home yet, so we have an appointment with the vet this afternoon at 5pm to assess my flight status.

Yesterday, despite being on my death bed, I managed to have a good dig in the dirt when the Lady wasn't looking.

Here's the hole I dug yesterday
while the Lady wasn't looking.

Today, so far, I've had a good day. For breakfast I had two tins of my favorite food - sardines. After breakfast, I spent time on the porch soaking up the sun. Later the Lady took me out into the yard and the orchard and let me meander through a long, yummy sniff. She even let me eat the cat poo lumps that she usually pulls me away from.

Here I am soaking up the morning sun.

I don't smell so good, the odor that wafts from my back end. But you might not either, if you'd been on my sardine diet. I don't care. I don't think the Lady minds too much either.

Later, back in the house, I climbed up into her lap in the armchair. She cried and I licked her tears. She thinks I don't understand all these code words, that I don't know what's going on. But I know.

Here I am with my big belly,
soaking up my Lady from her red fleece.

As you can see, I'm not dead yet, but I'm not very comfortable. We'll see what the vet has to say.  No matter what, I'm happy to have had this sweet life.

  4. Aw. So sweet. If we could wipe your tears away we would. We all know what it means to have to let go. Thanks again for sharing this beautiful dog Miss Birdy and sharing your heartache with us. Maybe she has more time. Maybe not. But you all gave her a wonderful seven months and we can never thank you all enough for what you did for this beautiful Miss Birdy and sharing your wonderful stories and updates and pictures of your life with this great dog. We are with you and Miss Birdy through it all, the good and the bad of loving a precious animal that never lives long enough.

  6. Oh Birdy, I'm so glad you are enjoying your days and doing all the things that you love to do. We should all be so lucky to have our days end with all the things we love around us. Your Lady is a wonderful person.

  7. I had to say goodbye to my best friend, Zora, last year. I worried so that I would wait too long, or not long enough. She didn't let that happen. One day she let me know. We spent two days cuddling together, and she got all her favorite foods. Her last morning she was surprisingly spry, but she was ready to go. Tears are streaming as I type this, and I know how sad this is. Zora seemed to know exactly what was happening when we went to the vet, and she was at peace with it. Like Birdy, she was sweet and stubborn and she loved her life. And she let me know when she was ready to go. A last act of love and loyalty that I am forever grateful for. My heart is with you and Birdy today. Give her an extra sardine for me.

  8. So glad you found a soft, loving place to land this past year, Birdy. Your story touched my heart and made it big enough to take in my very own elderbull, CJ. (He has bad knees... and at 10 he's going to need a lot of love and patience.) Sending a whole bunch of love from me to you and your Lady today.

  10. When we do it right, and all goes well, we have to fulfill a final obligation. We enjoy the journey of their lifetime within that of our own, but as we have guided and love them in life, so we must guide them into death.

I lost my oldest, my best, my greatest dog ever, Bert, forty days ago.

And now, in some odd way that only dog people understand, I will lose Birdy when she leaves.

Thank you for giving her this life, and thank you for the final obligation in love.

    Take Care,
    Mike
